How to Inspect a Marketplace Listing Before You Reserve
A listing is a structured offer, not merely a rate card. Spending two minutes checking every field can prevent a reservation that neither party is equipped to settle.
Read the headline correctly
Confirm the currency pair and whether the owner is buying or selling FX. Then read the rate as naira per unit of foreign currency. The available amount tells you what remains, while minimum and maximum values define the permitted reservation size.
Calculate the settlement amount independently. If the numbers or direction do not match your intention, do not proceed because the card looks familiar.
Inspect both sides of settlement
The FX delivery route explains how foreign currency moves: for example local domiciliary inflow, cash deposit, international transfer or an approved provider route. The naira payment method is a separate choice. Both must be practical for the parties.
Check that you have an eligible verified account. A USD label does not make a Nigerian domiciliary account interchangeable with Zelle or a US bank account.
Assess conditions and member context
Review partial-fill rules, delivery estimate, notes and any declared funding context. Avoid listings whose notes try to override platform safeguards, request secret information or move settlement outside the Trade Room.
Verification, successful trades, rating volume and recent activity provide context. Use them together. A five-star score from one trade is different from a stable record across many counterparties.
Know what becomes binding
The marketplace card can change as availability changes. Once you reserve, rely on the amount, rate, participants and route recorded in that reservation and its Trade Room. Save no separate off-platform version as a substitute for the protected record.
If an essential detail is unclear, choose another listing or resolve it before reserving. A reservation should begin execution of understood terms, not open a negotiation for different ones.
A complete listing inspection
Use the same sequence every time. A consistent inspection is more reliable than deciding from whichever field first attracts attention. The purpose is not to predict whether a counterparty will behave perfectly; it is to identify whether the offer is understandable, executable and compatible with the platform’s protected flow.
Worked example
A card offers $600 at ₦1,370/$, allows partial fills, accepts local FX inflow and lists a 120-minute delivery estimate. The calculated Naira settlement is ₦822,000. Before reserving, confirm that $600 falls within the card limits, that you understand which party is delivering FX, and that the required participant has a verified same-currency domiciliary account.
Next check the separate Naira payment method and protected payment order. Review the member’s verification, successful-trade count, rating volume and recent activity together. If the note asks for a different route, an unrelated third-party account, an OTP or communication outside the Trade Room, do not reserve that offer merely because its rate is attractive.
Step 1: pair, direction and arithmetic
Confirm the foreign currency and NGN pairing. “Buy FX” describes the listing owner’s intention; “Sell FX” means the owner is offering foreign currency. Work out the settlement yourself: FX amount multiplied by the quoted NGN rate. Compare the result with the reservation summary and stop if the direction or calculation does not match your intention.
Step 2: availability and fill rules
Available amount tells you what remains in the listing. Minimum and maximum values restrict the amount of one reservation. Partial fill determines whether the owner accepts less than the full available amount. A listing may be genuine yet unsuitable because your desired amount falls outside those boundaries.
Step 3: both settlement legs
Inspect the FX route and Naira method separately. Local FX inflow, cash deposit, international SWIFT, Zelle and US wire each require different compatible accounts or instructions. “USD account” alone is not enough: its location and configured payment route matter. An empty receiving-account dropdown usually indicates that no eligible verified account matches the chosen currency and route.
Step 4: timing, order and evidence
The delivery estimate sets an expectation, not permission to bypass verification. The protected payment order tells the parties which settlement leg should occur first. Evidence should be uploaded through the Trade Room, while actual cleared credit must be checked independently in the relevant bank or provider account.
Step 5: understand the member indicators
Identity or business verification improves accountability; it does not insure the transaction. A rating is more informative when considered with review count. Successful-trade history and recent activity add context but do not replace route checks, payment confirmation or the dispute process.
Red flags visible before reservation
- The notes contradict the route shown on the card.
- The requested amount cannot fit within the listing limits.
- The only proposed account belongs to an unrelated person without an approved context.
- The counterparty requests passwords, card details, PINs or OTPs.
- The counterparty wants to replace the recorded account through WhatsApp or another private channel.
- The promised timing depends on treating a screenshot as cleared funds.
After you click Reserve
Re-read the locked rate, amount, settlement value, participants, payment order and account instructions in the reservation or Trade Room. Marketplace availability may change after your reservation, but the transaction record should remain the reference. If the protected details are unavailable or materially wrong, stop and contact support instead of sending money elsewhere.

Frequently asked questions
Does verification mean I can skip listing checks?
No. Verification improves accountability but every offer and settlement step still requires review.
What if the account dropdown is empty?
The selected route may not match any eligible verified account. Add or verify the correct account rather than selecting an unrelated one.
Can listing notes change protected rules?
No. Notes cannot override platform security, verification or settlement controls.
Sources and rate context
NairaFX marketplace rates are not official CBN rates. NairaFX rates reflect member listings and the terms recorded for a specific marketplace transaction. Central Bank of Nigeria NFEM references describe the official market benchmark and may differ by time, source, route, amount and transaction conditions.
